Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Training Courses: The what, why and how of GRI Sustainability Reporting

Envirostate-and-Banarra-TP-logo-blue-smallBanarra knows sustainability reporting. We have written many award winning GRI sustainability reports for our clients and for our own business, and have been assuring sustainability reports for almost a decade, including numerous GRI Application Level checks.

Our people were involved in the development of the G3 Guidelines and we are now helping shape the next version of the GRI, including actively participating in one of the G4 working groups. We were also invited by the GRI to speak on materiality at the last global GRI Conference in Amsterdam and to present a Materiality Masterclass at the first Australian GRI Conference on Sustainability, Integrated Reporting and the G4, held in Melbourne in March 2012.

Our recognition by the GRI as a Certified GRI Training Provider in Australia in partnership with Envirostate in New Zealand, allows us to share our extensive reporting and assurance expertise gained from our direct engagement with organisations across a wide range of sectors and regional contexts. We bring an engaging, interactive approach to our GRI training, with an emphasis on real life examples, practical solutions and space for discussion and reflection.

"Fantastic presenters – the two together work really well. Different knowledge, experiences and insights – really well done. Bravo!" [Jane McGuire, Senior Corporate Affairs Advisor, CITIC Pacific Mining]

In 2013, we will be offering a range of GRI certified training courses, including:

And due to popular demand, this year we are also offering an additional (non GRI certified) workshop:

Our workshops are delivered in an environment that is convenient, supports learning and creates a positive atmosphere for open discussion. As such, we ensure that all training facilities are easily accessible by public transport and have lots of natural light, adequate ventilation, heating and cooling – after all, there is nothing worse than being in a dark room that is freezing cold or hot and sticky.

Of course, we also provide all course materials and a delicious lunch and morning and afternoon tea.

In addition, participants of Banarra's GRI workshops will be eligible to attend future Banarra Breakfast Club events. These events are open to a select number of attendees by invitation only and focus on thought-provoking explorations of the latest trends and developments in sustainability.

If none of these GRI courses whet your appetite, you might be interested in further exploring with us in-house or other custom-made sustainability-related training tailored to meet your needs. Just give us a call to discuss how we might be able to assist your organisation.

GRI SME Sustainability Reporting

If you have ever wondered how a project as complex and multi-faceted as producing a sustainability report fits in with an SME's available resources and internal priorities, then this is the course for you. Whilst covering the same content as the classic GRI training course, this 2-day course applies a specific SME perspective, taking into account the unique requirements of SMEs and using specifically tailored case studies and workshop activities.

With only 15 employees ourselves, we understand the challenges as we prepare our own sustainability report every year. We can therefore bring a unique perspective and key insights to this training as we are both an SME and an expert advisor to SMEs. A number of our reporting clients are SMEs, as are many of the companies we work with every year in Westpac's supply chain.

All participants will receive copies of the presentation materials, the GRI G3.1 Guidelines, the GRI's learning publication Let´s Report! Step-by-step guidance to prepare a basic GRI sustainability report and an official certificate of attendance from the GRI.

In 2013, our 2-day GRI certified SME Sustainability Reporting workshops will be held on:

GRI Defining Report Content (Materiality)

This new GRI certified 1-day workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of the GRI and wish to explore further the critical concept of materiality, what GRI calls the ‘define’ phase of sustainability reporting.

Materiality is an area where we have been able to deliver significant insight and understanding in the past during our certified GRI training courses. Done properly, materiality can deliver improvements, not just in relation to reporting, but also in terms of fundamental improvements in strategy development and risk management, as well as longer term sustainability outcomes.

At the end of the workshop you will have a comprehensive understanding of how to go about deciding the most relevant and meaningful content for your sustainability report, both from a business and stakeholder point of view.

This workshop builds on the success of the Materiality Masterclass we delivered at the 2012 Australian GRI Conference.

All participants will receive copies of the presentation materials, the GRI G3.1 Guidelines and an official certificate of attendance from the GRI.

In 2013 our 2-day GRI certified Defining Report Content workshops will be held on the following dates:

GRI Stakeholder Engagement

This new GRI certified 1-day workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of the GRI and wish to delve more deeply into the principles and best practice of stakeholder engagement, what GRI calls the 'connect' phase of sustainability reporting.

The GRI urges reporters to frame sustainability reports in relation to stakeholders. Indeed stakeholder inclusivity is fundamental to the success of an organisation's entire sustainability strategy, not just its reporting. However many organisations either do not engage their stakeholders at all or engage them just for engagement's sake, thus missing out on the powerful strategic and tactical benefits that effective and systematic stakeholder engagement can bring.

At the end of the workshop you will have a comprehensive understanding of how to go about defining and dialoguing with your key stakeholders.

At Banarra we have a strong track record of designing, delivering and reviewing stakeholder engagement approaches and will bring to the workshop our experiences from working with a wide range of organisations in this context.

All participants will receive copies of the presentation materials, the GRI G3.1 Guidelines and an official certificate of attendance from the GRI.

In 2013 our 1-day GRI certified Stakeholder Engagement workshops will be held on the following dates:

GRI Performance Indicators

This new 1-day workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of the GRI and wish to understand in more detail how to collect and analyse sustainability data in line with the GRI's Technical Protocols, what the GRI calls the 'monitor' phase of reporting. The workshop focuses in detail on 15 of the most often used and/or problematic Performance Indicators, decided with input from the workshop participants. It also includes tips on how to avoid common data accuracy pitfalls and how best to prepare for internal review or external data verification and assurance.

At the end of the workshop you will have an in-depth understanding of data collection systems and the technical requirements of how to calculate the specified GRI Performance Indicators.

While the GRI does not currently offer any certified training on Performance Indicators, understanding and reporting in accordance with the requirements of the GRI Performance Indicators is an area Banarra has seen organisations struggle with a great deal. As such, Banarra has developed this tailored and technically focused course to fill this gap and respond to the data challenges faced by many reporters.

All participants will receive copies of the presentation materials, the relevant GRI G3.1 Performance Indicators and Technical Protocols and a certificate of attendance from Banarra.

In 2013 our 1-day Performance Indicators courses will be held on the following dates:
